Her journey from maternity leave to a dual role as a manager and product owner at Tietoevry exemplifies the potential for women in tech, and she advocates for greater gender balance in the industry.

From Maternity Leave to IT Pro

Barbora's interest in technology was sparked during her maternity leave, inspired by her husband and father, both of whom are passionate about IT. "While being on maternity leave, I made a decision to look into this," she recalls. This decision led her to enroll in server management training, where she faced the challenge of studying while caring for her two children. "I studied during the nights and attended school with help of my parents who took care of the kids," she shares, highlighting her commitment to learning.

Her career path has been diverse, starting with a year in the UK as a care assistant, followed by over four years in a telecommunications outsourcing company. "I started as a person ordering equipment in SAP and tracking the orders," she explains, gradually moving up to a team leader role.

This journey culminated in her current position at Tietoevry, where she has dual role as a manager of a team delivering services to Norwegian oil and gas customers and equally a leader of a global energy network with a focus on energy and utility offerings and services. Her diverse role and the proximity to customers is what Barbora appreciates a lot at her work. “I am customer oriented person. I believe that we have great capabilities within the teams and we are able to help and address challenges that the customers are facing.“ She values unique business environment in Norway, which is very collaborative, transparent and opened.

Learning and Growth in the Tech Industry

Barbora acknowledges, "I would never have thought that IT would be a possible career for me when I was choosing university,” and adds, “However, my own experience led me to believe that the tech world is filled with exciting possibilities for self-development. Hence, I encourage women not to be afraid to study and pursue careers in technology.

For women considering a career in tech, Barbora advises, "Get in touch with universities and organizations such as Czechitas which supports women in tech. Check companies that do programs for women." She believes that there are numerous opportunities beyond programming, urging women to explore the various roles available in the industry.

Improving Gender Balance in IT

Barbora addresses the challenges women face in a predominantly male environment. "IT is still a men’s environment," she notes, advocating for a fair approach without prejudice. She acknowledges her luck in having a supportive team at Tietoevry but recognizes the need for improvement in the industry.

To improve gender balance in tech, Barbora suggests that companies collaborate with schools and educate parents about IT. "We have a long-term plan which involves variety projects to promote STEM education, we do lectures, tours and open doors for students" she explains, emphasizing the importance of continued focus on this issue.

A Passion for Adventure

In a light-hearted moment, Barbora shares a fun fact about herself: "I love bikepacking." Her adventurous spirit is evident as she recounts a spontaneous 650 km bike trip to Gdansk with a friend, showcasing her love for life and exploration.

Barbora Kedroutková's journey is a testament to the power of determination and passion in overcoming barriers in the tech industry. “Changing someone's opinion or overcoming prejudice can be incredibly difficult, and at times, impossible. As a woman in IT, I have faced situations where I was made to feel like I didn’t belong or was unwelcome. There is no simple solution to handle such challenges, but I have learned that the key lies in self-awareness and confidence.“

Rather than internalizing negativity, she recommends "I focus on strengthening my self-esteem, embracing my values, and staying true to my expertise. Surrounding myself with open-minded and supportive individuals has been crucial.“ Her story serves as an inspiration for women everywhere to pursue their dreams, regardless of the challenges they may face.
