Tietoevry Care explores the benefits of open and modular clinical applications at Basel University Hospital

Clinical applications can add value across countries with diverse healthcare needs.

Published: 02 July 2025

Tietoevry Care, a leading provider of data-driven healthcare software, is validating its clinical applications with Basel University Hospital’s new open data platform.

Basel University Hospital is developing a next-generation health data platform based on the openEHR standard. The platform is designed to work smoothly with other healthcare systems and support better patient care.

To maximize the value of the platform, Tietoevry Care is evaluating how its clinical applications can be integrated to the platform to enhance clinical workflows, enable secondary use of health data, and drive innovation in care delivery. This initiative highlights the growing interest in Nordic healthcare IT and the value of modular, open solutions in European healthcare.

Tietoevry Care’s clinical modules, Lifecare Journal view and Observations together with Lifecare Data Entry are based on openEHR. The Lifecare Journal View and Observations deliver intuitive graphical insights created from complex datasets. The Lifecare Data Entry is designed to simplify inserting good quality patient data. Both modules are highly customizable to meet unique clinical needs and can be used in any type of healthcare environment and any clinician.

The Basel University Hospital’s platform itself is being developed by a consortium led by Swiss consultancy OWT, with key partners including x-tention and Better.

“This is a great opportunity to demonstrate how our clinical applications can add value across countries with diverse healthcare needs. It highlights the advantages of a flexible, modular approach to healthcare software development in enhancing the experience of both care professionals and patients”, says Teemu Vähäkainu, Head of Data-driven Care at Tietoevry Care.

The collaboration follows the successful conclusion of the Digital Health Nation Open Innovation Challenge, hosted by Innosuisse. Tietoevry Care was selected to participate in the challenge, which focused on advancing openEHR-based solutions in Switzerland.  As a result, the organizations continue working on the data platform project, further strengthening their role as developers of digital healthcare solutions in the region.
