Edyta Budny: Software is a commodity like any other

Edyta Budny / listopada 26, 2024

Did you know that skills from the field of commodity science can be incredibly valuable in the IT industry? It’s a strong foundation for creating top-quality products and services – even in the digital realm! Edyta Budny’s career path is a perfect example that IT isn’t just about programming skills.

Edyta’s journey with Tietoevry began with an internship in the Radio Incubator in 2020. This two-month programme helped her build essential testing skills and gain theoretical knowledge about LTE. Upon completion, Edyta joined the team permanently, conducting tests in a simulated radio environment. A year later, eager for new challenges, she advanced to the DevOps team, where she works on automating processes, managing infrastructure as code, and implementing best practices for CI/CD. She also recently started working as Scrum Master. “I focus on improving communication and organisational skills, which are key to managing a team. I aim to create a collaborative work environment where every team member feels involved and valued,” she shares.

In addition, for over two years, she has been coordinating the internship programme for C/C++ developers, providing the same level of support that she once received. “One of the things I particularly value about working in Tietoevry is the trust. I think the company’s strength is built by hiring engaged, passionate people.” This foundation of trust fosters harmonious teamwork and keeps motivation high.

Interestingly, Edyta only began learning Python programming after graduating her studies at Poznań University of Economics and Business. During her university years, she also organised events for the Guitar Academy Festival and other commercial music events. This experience of juggling tasks in the music industry translated directly to her current roles, where she combines technical skills with soft competencies. As a DevOps engineer she thrives on the technical side, while as a Scrum Master and internship programme manager, she gets to exercise her leadership skills.

“Studying Commodity Science taught me about the process of shaping the quality of goods and services. Meanwhile, my experience in the music industry gave me soft skills in organising, coordinating, and managing partnerships with private and public entities,” she explains. “It showed me how many elements go into successful project delivery.”

When asked about her favourite project, Edyta finds it hard to choose. “I feel daily satisfaction because I’m involved in so many different initiatives within the company.” Among her extracurricular activities, she highlights her role in the Being an IT Girl project – an initiative aimed at inspiring young women to explore tech. Edyta spoke at a 2023 conference and visited schools to introduce students to careers in IT.

Unlike many, Edyta sees her professional path in the long term. “A core goal for me is to feel that my work is meaningful. I believe work should bring not only financial benefits but also satisfaction and a sense of purpose,” she declares. “I’d also like to keep exploring new roles in the future to broaden my understanding of the diverse skills and roles involved in project work. I think this will help me develop broader competencies and stay motivated through regular change.”

Edyta admits that her work does impact her personal life, but she makes an effort to keep a healthy balance. One habit that helps is shutting down her computer at the end of each day, which has significantly improved her work-life separation and rest. Tackling any backlog immediately also helps to minimise stress and keep her focused. Maintaining connections with family and friends remains a priority, as do regular sports like running and swimming, which enhance both relaxation and productivity. Although cooking has taken a back seat lately, Edyta still enjoys it and has a keen interest in health-related topics. What a renaissance woman!
